A Daily Massage for a Dear Friend


We all have a dear friend that we sometimes forget about or neglect. A friend that is always there for us and has been from the beginning. That friend is our own body. How do you feel about your body? Really … how do you feel? Do you question whether or not yours is a good body? Do you acknowledge all that your body does for you?

When is the last time you did something special for your body, a massage, some well needed rest, some quiet time, hydrating it with lots of water, etc. Think about it.

There people in our lives including our family and friends that we do many things for and yet sometimes our closest friend, our body, is the last to get special treatment and recognition from us. In fact just the opposite, we tend to get upset because our body may not look like we feel it should and give ourselves a hard time for it , or we may have some beliefs that don't support our own bodies.

The love and caring you feel and show for these friends and relatives is the same love that you should express to your lifetime friend, your body. Recognize your body as your best friend, however young you are this
is a very special friend that you have relied upon for all these years. Your body has been changing, adapting, healing, nourishing, accomplishing, stretching, breathing and sustaining you plus much more for all these years. It signals you on every level if you are open to it’s messages…messages from “I’m hot” to intuitive feelings such s “This just does not feel right to me.”

However long you have been hanging around with this beautiful friend we suggest that you really come to be true friends with it.

A simple way to say thank you is to treat yourself to the luxury of a daily oil massage. You will find a warm oil massage relaxing and comforting to your body to set it up to take on a new day, or thank it for the work it has done for you at the end of the day.

This 5,000 year old Indian tradition is said to be very powerful to recharge and rejuvenate the body.

The following excerpt is from Healing.about.com:

Abhyanga - the Ayurvedic oil massage - is an integral part of the daily routine recommended by this healing system for overall health and well-being. Traditional Ayurvedic texts wax eloquent on the benefits. Here's what one says - ‘ Give yourself a full body oil massage on a daily basis. It is nourishing, pacifies Vata and Kapha, relieves fatigue, provides stamina, pleasure and perfect sleep, enhances the complexion and the luster of the skin, promotes longevity and nourishes all parts of the body. When the views expressed in the different Ayurvedic texts are put together, here are the benefits that can be expected from regular performance of this pleasant daily ritual’:

* Increased circulation, especially to nerve endings
* Toning of the muscles and the whole physiology
* Calming for the nerves
* Lubrication of the joints
* Increased mental alertness
* Improved elimination of impurities from the body
* Softer, smoother skin
* Increased levels of stamina through the day
* Better, deeper sleep at night

Simple instructions for Abhyanga

1) In the morning warm about 1/4 cup of cured sesame oil to slightly above body temperature. Massage with the open part of the hand rather than with the fingertips and begin by first massaging your head. Pour a small amount of oil on the fingers and palms and massage your scalp with a gentle yet vigorous touch. Take time to massage your entire scalp and spend a bit more time when doing this part of your body.

2) You can now apply oil gently to your face and outer part of your ears.

3) Massage both the front and back of the neck, and the upper part of the spine.

4) Next rub your arms. When applying to your body keep in mind that the motion is up and down over your long bones and circular movement over your joints. Massage both arms, including especially the hands and fingers, working from the base of the finger to the tips.

5) Use a very gentle circular motion over your heart. When applying to the abdomen a gentle, clockwise, circular motion should be used, from the right lower part of the abdomen, moving towards the left lower part of the abdomen.

6) Rub the back and spine, being aware that there will be some areas you may have difficulty reaching.

7) Rub the legs, keeping in mind the up and down motion over the long bones and a circular motion over the joints.

8) Lastly, rub the top and bottoms of your feet. The feet are considered as important as your head so spend proportionately more time here as well. Using the open part of your hand and massage vigorously back and
forth over the soles of the feet.

9) Plan to leave the oil on your body for 15-20 minutes before bathing as this will give you the greatest results and effect. You can do this easily by wearing some light clothing and doing possibly a small task before bathing.

10) With each touch send a loving thank you to each part of your body for all that it does for you, your body will get the message, and YOU will feel the difference.
